Driveway and carport recolouring: who it suits and who it does not
Recolouring suits owners of sound concrete, stamped concrete or block-paved driveways, carports, ramps and car parks who want them to look renewed without demolition. It does not suit surfaces that are sinking or broken, owners who want a new material or layout, asphalt, or anyone whose main need is line marking.
Send us a photo and the m²Which surfaces is recolouring for?
Recolouring is for existing hard surfaces that carry vehicles and are structurally sound: concrete, stamped concrete and block paving. The problems it solves are on the surface: fading, stains, fine cracks, small holes and chipped edges.
- Villa and townhouse driveways
- Carports and parking bays, including under pergolas
- Residential garage floors and the aprons in front of them
- Private and communal garage ramps
- Communal garages and community car parks
- Business car parks with a concrete or paved surface
Which owners get the most from it?
The owners who get the most from it are those for whom appearance matters and disruption is costly. A dramatic visual change with no demolition is exactly what they need.
| Owner | Why it suits them |
|---|---|
| Holiday rental owner | Better listing photos and arrivals, work fitted between guests |
| Seller | An entrance that matches the rest of a well-kept house |
| Owner living abroad | Handled from photos, with updates at each stage |
| Community of owners | A cared-for garage without breaking out the floor |
| Business | A presentable car park restored in sections |
Owners who simply look at a faded driveway every day and want it to match the house also belong here. Not every reason has to be commercial.
It also suits owners who plan to stay in the house for years and prefer to look after what they have. A sound driveway that is cleaned, repaired and recoloured, then refreshed in the busy areas when needed, can keep serving the villa without ever becoming a building site.
Who is recolouring not for?
Recolouring is not for surfaces that need rebuilding or for goals that a coating cannot reach. Saying this plainly saves everyone time.
- Sinking, rocking or broken-up surfaces: the base must be repaired or rebuilt first.
- Wide, growing cracks: they suggest movement that needs a specialist.
- Ponding water: the levels are wrong, and paint will not change them.
- Root damage: roots keep moving the slab.
- Asphalt: we do not work on asphalt surfaces.
- A new material or layout: that is replacement, not restoration.
Our comparison of recolouring versus replacing a driveway helps if you are on the borderline.
Which jobs do we not take on?
We do not paint parking lines or number bays, coat industrial warehouse floors or interior living spaces, build new surfaces, or carry out structural assessments or design. If your project centres on any of these, another contractor is the right choice.
For example, a business that only wants its car park lines refreshed needs a line-marking company, not a surface restoration. A garage converted into a living room needs an interior flooring specialist.
Being clear about this is part of the service. A short message telling you that your project belongs with someone else is more useful than a quote for work that would not solve your problem.
What about owners who need a promised lifespan?
If a fixed lifespan figure is what you need to decide, recolouring may frustrate you. How long a coating looks good depends on the product, preparation, sun, traffic and care, and durability information belongs to the product data sheet.
What a restoration offers instead is a clear, documented process and the option to refresh busy areas later without starting again.
How can you tell which group you are in?
Take photos on a dry day and after rain. If the surface is flat, firm and drains, and the issue is colour, stains and fine cracks, you are almost certainly in the group recolouring suits. If something moves, sinks or holds water, start with the cause.
Send those photos to us. We will tell you which group you are in, even if the answer is that we are not the right contractor for your project.
Frequently asked questions
Is recolouring suitable for an old stamped concrete driveway?
Usually very suitable, as long as the base is sound. Old stamped concrete often fades badly while the slab stays solid, and the pattern reappears clearly under the new colour. The Marbella villa driveway we restored was exactly that kind of surface: faded and cracked, then dark, glossy and even.
Is it suitable for a block-paved driveway with weeds in the joints?
Weeds and moss are removed during cleaning, and the paving can then be recoloured if the blocks are firmly bedded. If roots have lifted blocks or the paving has sunk in places, it needs relaying by a paving contractor before recolouring makes sense.
Can recolouring work for a business with heavy traffic?
It works for car parks used by cars and vans. If lorries or heavy machinery regularly use the surface, mention it, because suitability for heavier loads depends on the product and its data sheet. The sectioned way of working suits most businesses that must stay open.
Is it suitable for a garage used as a workshop?
A home garage where you occasionally work on a car or bike is fine. A professional workshop or industrial unit with heavy equipment and chemicals is outside our scope. Interior living spaces converted from garages are also excluded. If you are unsure which side of the line your garage falls on, send photos and describe how it is used.
Is recolouring for me if I want to sell quickly?
If the surface is sound, it can improve presentation quickly and with little disruption, which suits a sale timetable. If the surface has structural issues, a buyer's surveyor may point them out regardless of colour, so fixing the cause would be more useful.
What if I only want the colour changed, not repaired?
Repairs are part of the process because paint over open cracks and holes looks poor and does not last. If your surface has no defects, the repair stage is simply short. We do not offer colour-only work that skips preparation.
Is it suitable for a pool surround?
Pool surrounds raise specific questions about slip and barefoot use that are outside the focus of this site, which deals with surfaces for vehicles. If the area next to your driveway includes a pool terrace, ask us and we will tell you what applies.
Is it for owners who want a different pattern?
No. Recolouring changes the colour and renews the surface, but the pattern of stamped concrete or the shape of paving blocks stays the same. A different pattern requires a new surface, which we do not build. If you are happy with the existing pattern and only the colour has failed, recolouring is the natural choice.
Is it for communities with limited budgets?
It can be, because a restoration costs far less than replacing a garage floor and can be phased over time, for example the ramp first and the parking levels later. The community should record the colour and product so later phases match.
How do I know if you are the right contractor for me?
Send us photos and tell us what you want to achieve. If your project is restoring a sound driveway, carport, garage floor, ramp or car park, we probably are. If it involves line marking, new surfaces, asphalt or structural work, we will tell you so and you can look elsewhere.
